River (Rio Negro) where we swam (3/16/00)
Dark ledge at far right is where John dove from.

Hot spring (aguas termales) at Oscar's albergue. (3/17/00)
Buoyant logs provided as floats for relaxation.

A typical bridge. We watch Lee Mahoney's car cross safely in front of us.

This river channel was reamed out by hot ash coming down the slope from Volcan Rincon de la Vieja in a recent eruption.

Jamie and Tino compete at checkers in the albergue. The pieces are bottle caps. The tabletops were painted by Laura, a local girl, to show jaguars, toucans, and other wildlife.

After a strenuous hike up through the rain forest, Oscar leads us to a waterfall.

On the way back down the volcano.

On the first day at la Anita, the hike by horseback down to the river

John luxuriates.

While we explored the waterfall, Oscar was off to one side - he returned with a large handfull of wet volcanic mud, recommended as a natural facial treatment - thus we continued our "day of beauty." John stood under the waterfall for a massage.

A typical river crossing without a bridge. At one, Lee's car ahead of us burbled mellifluously as the exhaust pipe went under.

Caught the summit of Volcan Rincon de la Vieja in a rare moment when it was not swathed in cloud. The far peak is the summit; the near lip is the crater rim.

Water nymphs. Alexis in her Zarcero cowboy hat.

Tino proudly shows us his prize horse, Whiskey, at his other finca in Liberia.
