Got onto *very* rough dirt road for last 9k - progressively closer to base of volcano - dark patches & striations down slope above us show where lava has flowed

Checked in - room 7 is rustic & has 3 beds [incl. Bunk] - room 14 has 2 enormous beds in large modern room with huge picture windows directly facing volcano - very new expansion of the lodge - good quality

Breakfast @ arenal gift shop - emma had seen a coati

Departed - stopped several times on the way out of Arenal to look at birds - identification was non-trivial - sky gradually cleared - windmill farm at end of lake arenal - startling swiss chalet - road washouts - down to the Guanacaste plain - hot flat - 22km on the panamerican highway - then back up towards Mirravalle following John's hand-drawn maps
